Marc Muffley is a 40 year old man. Police have accused him of having an explosive at Lehigh Valley International Airport in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Marc Muffley Allegations

Muffley Arrested After Airport Bomb Scare. “Marc Muffley, 40, is charged with possessing an explosive in an airport and possessing or attempting to place an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft, according to a criminal complaint. Prosecutors allege that the material was found in a suitcase Muffley had checked in Monday at Lehigh Valley International Airport to Allegiant Air Flight 201, which was bound for Orlando Sanford International Airport in Florida.” [AP]

Report: Muffley’s Bag Set Of Alarms. “During routine screening by Transportation Security Administration agents, Muffley’s bag set off an alarm indicating it contained suspicious items, according to a criminal complaint. TSA personnel found a “circular compound, approximately three inches in diameter, wrapped in a wax-like paper and clear plastic wrap hidden in the lining of the baggage,” the complaint said. The “immediate area” of the airport where the device was found was then evacuated “out of an abundance of caution,” TSA said in a statement.” [CBS]

Complaint: Device Used Material Similar To Commercial Fireworks. “The device hidden in the bag’s lining was a circular compound, about 3 inches in diameter, that had two fuses and powder concealed in wax paper and plastic wrap, according to the criminal complaint. The “powder is suspected to be a mixture of flash powder and the dark granulars that are used in commercial grade fireworks,” the complaint said. “The black powder and flash powder are susceptible to ignite from heat and friction and posed a significant risk to the aircraft and passengers.”” [ABC]

TSA: Immediate Area Of Airport Evacuated After Alarm. “Out of an abundance of caution, the immediate area of airport was evacuated and the Lehigh- Northampton Airport Authority Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were notified. FBI and local law enforcement bomb technicians determined that the item was indeed an explosive device. “Transportation Security Officers are highly trained and highly skilled professionals at the front line of aviation security who are focused on their mission and catches such as this illustrate the point,” said TSA Federal Security Director Karen Keys-Turner. “This is an example of how the strong partnerships we have established with the airport authority, FBI and local law enforcement came together to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public. I commend our entire TSA team at Lehigh Valley International Airport and the professional manner in which this incident was handled.”” [TSA]
