
Jiale Li is a 26 year old man from Blacksburg, Virginia. Li has been accused of running a gift card scam and raking in over $500,000. People were told that agents of the IRS and other government agencies were demanding gift card purchases or else jail time would be handed out.

Li Arrested And Charged. “Jiale Li, 26, of Blacksburg, was arrested on Sept. 1. Police say Li was running a phone scam where individuals would pretend to work for the IRS, Social Security Administration, Microsoft, or the DEA and tell victims that they would need to purchase a gift card to stay out of jail or to fix their account. ” [Fox 5]
$500,000 In Gift Cards Allegedly Purchased In Scam. “Victims were told to purchase a gift card to stay out of jail or fix their account, police said. Then Li allegedly would use those gift cards to purchase more gift cards to sell at a discounted rate. They say he purchased $500,000 worth of gift cards with the cards from victims.” [WSET]
