More than 140 people were shot and killed over the July 4th holiday in America, as organizations like the NRA work to keep the country awash in guns.
The conservative Daily Mail reports that between July 3 and 5, there were at least 379 shootings all across the country. Of those shootings, 142 people are dead.
The deaths come as Congress has yet to pass major gun reform despite the passage of legislation in the House of Representatives.
National polling has repeatedly shown widespread support for gun safety measures like expanded background checks and red flag laws, but Republicans have continued to oppose reform.
The party has continued to receive millions in support via advertising and political organizing on behalf of the NRA, even as the outside group has come under government investigation.
In 2020, the NRA was forced to file for bankruptcy but continued to work to elect Republican officials at both the federal and state level.
At the same time, gun crimes have begun to accelerate after Americans emerge from COVID-induced lockdowns.
