Tyler Nike Thomas is a 39-year-old Columbus, Ohio, man federally indicted in connection with the kidnapping, sexual exploitation and death of 17-year-old Indiana teenager Hailey Buzbee.

A federal grand jury returned a nine-count indictment against Thomas on September 23, 2026, including kidnapping resulting in death and two other charges alleging offenses resulting in Buzbee’s death. Federal prosecutors allege Thomas met Buzbee through online video games when she was 15, attempted to entice her into sexual activity, picked her up from her Indiana home in January 2026 and transported her to Ohio.

Prosecutors further allege Thomas murdered Buzbee during the offenses and then decapitated and dismembered her body before burying and discarding her remains. The charges are allegations, and Thomas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

What Is Tyler Nike Thomas Accused Of Doing To Hailey Buzbee?

Federal prosecutors accuse Thomas of developing an online relationship with Buzbee while she was a minor and eventually traveling across state lines to pick her up.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio says Thomas met Buzbee while playing online games including Roblox and League of Legends. Prosecutors allege that as early as May 2024, when Buzbee was 15, Thomas attempted to entice her into sexual activity. [DOJ]

During the overnight hours of January 5 and January 6, 2026, prosecutors allege Thomas traveled from Columbus to Fortville, Indiana, picked up the then-17-year-old Buzbee and transported her back to Ohio with the intention of engaging in prohibited sexual activity with her. [DOJ]

The September 23 federal indictment contains nine counts:

Could Tyler Thomas Face The Death Penalty?

Several of the charges expose Thomas to a potential death sentence under federal law.

According to the Justice Department, kidnapping resulting in death is punishable by death or life imprisonment. The counts alleging illicit interstate travel resulting in death and transportation of a minor for criminal sexual activity resulting in death are also punishable by death or up to life in prison. The remaining charges also carry potentially lengthy prison sentences. Traveling to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor carries up to 30 years; sexual exploitation carries 15 to 30 years; attempted enticement carries 10 years to life; obstruction carries up to 20 years; and accessing digital material with intent to view child pornography carries up to 20 years. The availability of the death penalty under the statutes does not by itself mean federal prosecutors will ultimately seek a death sentence.

Who Was Hailey Buzbee?

Hailey Paige Buzbee was a 17-year-old student at Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Indiana.

How Did Hailey Buzbee Meet Tyler Thomas?

Investigators say Buzbee and Thomas met through online gaming.

Federal court documents specifically identify Roblox and League of Legends as games through which the two interacted. Investigators subsequently determined that Buzbee and Thomas had communicated for more than a year. [WRTV]

Thomas allegedly used online gaming platforms as well as an encrypted messaging application called Session to communicate with Buzbee. [WRTV]

Buzbee disappeared from her home in the Fishers/Fortville area during the night of January 5, 2026.

Her parents discovered that she was missing and contacted police. Investigators subsequently identified a vehicle seen in the neighborhood and connected it to Thomas. [WOSU]

Thomas admitted to investigators that he had picked Buzbee up, according to authorities. He initially claimed he later left her alongside a road in western Ohio. Investigators determined that account was false. [WOSU]

Where Did Tyler Thomas Allegedly Take Hailey?

Cellphone evidence cited by federal prosecutors places Thomas and Buzbee in several locations after she left Indiana.

Prosecutors allege Thomas transported Buzbee from Indiana to Columbus. On the afternoon of January 6, Thomas allegedly traveled from Columbus to an Airbnb in Logan, Ohio. [DOJ]

The next morning, at approximately 9:25 a.m. on January 7, location information from Thomas’s phone allegedly showed him traveling to the area around the North Country Trail Trailhead in Wayne National Forest.

His phone remained in that area for approximately five hours before beginning to travel back toward Columbus, according to federal investigators. [DOJ]

Where Was Hailey Buzbee’s Body Found?

Buzbee’s remains were recovered in Wayne National Forest near the North Country Trail Trailhead in Perry County, Ohio, in early February.

Hocking County Sheriff Lanny North said Thomas led investigators to the location where he said he had buried Buzbee. Authorities recovered remains from the location and sent them for examination and identification. [WLWT]

The location is significant because federal investigators say cellphone data placed Thomas in the same area for approximately five hours on January 7, the day after he allegedly transported Buzbee to the Logan Airbnb. [DOJ]

Thomas’s cellphone has become a central source of evidence in the federal prosecution.

A forensic examination allegedly recovered deleted communications and interactions between Thomas and Buzbee, including Snapchat messages. Investigators also reported finding sexually explicit images of Buzbee that appeared to have been taken at Thomas’s Columbus residence and the Logan Airbnb. [DOJ]

Columbus police searched Thomas’s residence on Hunter Avenue as investigators reconstructed Buzbee’s movements after she left Indiana.

When Was Tyler Thomas First Arrested?

Thomas was initially arrested in January 2026 on local charges as authorities investigated Buzbee’s disappearance.

He initially faced Ohio charges including pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and tampering with evidence. Those local charges were later superseded by the federal prosecution. [WOSU]

In February, Thomas was transferred into federal custody and charged by criminal complaint with sexual exploitation of a minor and traveling interstate with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. The local pandering charge was dismissed as the case moved into federal court. [DOJ]

The September 23 grand jury indictment replaces that earlier two-charge stage of the federal case with nine counts, including charges directly alleging that Thomas caused Buzbee’s death.

Why Did Murder Charges Take Months To Be Filed?

Thomas was not immediately charged with causing Buzbee’s death after her remains were recovered.

When federal prosecutors announced the initial exploitation charges on February 10, U.S. Attorney Dominick Gerace emphasized that those charges did not represent the end of the investigation. Federal, state and local investigators continued gathering and processing evidence. [DOJ]

The allegations involve conduct crossing state lines as well as federal kidnapping and child-exploitation laws.

Prosecutors allege Thomas traveled from Ohio to Indiana, picked up a minor and transported her back across state lines for prohibited sexual activity. The alleged conduct subsequently occurred at locations in multiple Ohio counties and on federal land in Wayne National Forest.
