Democrats are proposing that families with children be given $3,000 per year in a direct cash payment.
Democrats Propose Family Payments After COVID-19
Democrats: Payments Will Soften Effect of Pandemic. ““The pandemic is driving families deeper and deeper into poverty, and it’s devastating. We are making the Child Tax Credit more generous, more accessible, and by paying it out monthly, this money is going to be the difference in a roof over someone’s head or food on their table,” Neal said in a statement provided to CNN.” [CNN]
Both Democrats And Republicans Support The Proposal. “The new legislation, led by Ways and Means chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.), comes shortly after Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) introduced a similar proposal, lending bipartisan support to expanding cash benefits for families with children.” [Axios]
Payments Would Be Sent To Families With Children Between 6 to 17. “Under the proposal, the Internal Revenue Service would provide $3,600 over the course of the year per child under the age of 6, as well as $3,000 per child of ages 6 to 17. The size of the benefit would diminish for Americans earning more than $75,000 per year, as well as for couples jointly earning more than $150,000 per year. The payments would be sent monthly beginning in July, a delay intended to give the IRS time to prepare for the massive new initiative.” [Washington Post]
