Wyoming GOP Censures Liz Cheney Over Trump Impeachment Vote

The Wyoming Republican Party has censured Rep. Liz Cheney because she voted to impeach Donald Trump.

Wyoming GOP Censure

Wyoming GOP Censures Cheney. “The Wyoming GOP approved a censure resolution by a vote of 56 to 8. The censure resolution says the state party will not raise money for her in the future and also asks that she repay any donations made to her 2020 campaign by the state party and any county parties that request it. ” [CBS]

Cheney Was One Of Just 10 Republicans To Vote For Impeachment. “Cheney, the third-ranking member of House Republican leadership, was one of just 10 members of her party to support impeaching Trump for a second time. She and other party leaders have come under fire from Trump loyalists for siding with Democrats in the impeachment.” [NPR]

Cheney Said It Was A Mistake To Censure Her. “Cheney told Fox News Sunday that members of the Wyoming GOP “are mistaken. They believe that BLM and Antifa were behind what happened here at the Capitol. It’s just simply not the case.”” [Axios]

Cheney Voted For Impeachment Of Donald Trump

Cheney Said Impeaching Trump Was Necessary. ““My vote to impeach was compelled by the oath I swore to the Constitution,” Ms. Cheney said in a statement on Saturday. “Wyoming citizens know that this oath does not bend or yield to politics or partisanship.”” [NY Times]

Cheney Refused To Resign Her Leadership Position In The House. “”Look I think people all across Wyoming understand and recognize that our most important duty is to the Constitution. And as I’ve explained and will continue to explain to supporters all across the state, voters all across the state, the oath that I took to the Constitution compelled me to vote for impeachment, and it doesn’t bend to partisanship, it doesn’t bend to political pressure, it’s the most important oath that we take.”” [Fox]

Capitol Riot Speech Prompted Impeachment Vote

Trump Called For Cheney’s Removal In Speech Before Capitol Riot. ““We got to get rid of the weak congresspeople, the ones that aren’t any good, the Liz Cheneys of the world,” Trump said in the speech, singling her out as he urged the mob to march to the Capitol. After being informed of the president’s tirade by her father, Cheney walked out on the House floor, still hoping to stop the effort backed by Trump to overturn the electoral college votes.” [Washington Post]

Cheney Said Trump Incited Capitol Attack Mob. “”Much more will become clear in coming days and weeks, but what we know now is enough. The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution. “I will vote to impeach the President.”” [Cheney Statement]
