Merrill Arrested, Accused Of Secret Recordings. “Chester Police Department officers on May 7 received a report of potential voyeurism at Merrill’s home, according to court documents made public on Thursday. Two days later, Chester police interviewed a child who reported finding a recording device in a bathroom at Merrill’s residence, the documents showed. The child also told police about witnessing Merrill at Green Mountain Union High School, positioning his phone by his waist as if he was recording images of the young girls who were walking in front of him, according to court records.” [VT Digger]
DA Claims Merrill Is A Danger To Community. “The preliminary assessment of the evidence supports a finding that defendant Merrill cannot be released on conditions, given the danger he poses to the community. Merrill’s conduct is particularly concerning and indicative of danger to the community in light of his position as a high school teacher, and his apparent violation of the trust the community has placed in him to care for and teach their children.” [DA Filing]
DOJ: Merrill Indicted By Grand Jury. “The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced that Norman Merrill II, 45, of Chester, Vermont, was arrested today after having been indicted by a federal grand jury for charges related to the production and possession of child sexual abuse material, also known as child pornography.” [DOJ]
DOJ: Police Found Pinhole, Spy Cameras At Merrill House. “Chester Police Officers obtained search warrants for Merrill’s home and electronics. The search warrants were executed on May 11, 2022, and Chester Police Officers seized numerous electronic devices, including “pinhole cameras” and a “spy camera.” The Vermont State Police conducted a preliminary examination of a memory card seized from the residence which revealed numerous voyeuristic videos taken in bathrooms.” [DOJ]
DOJ: If Convicted Could Serve 15-30 Years In Prison. “The United States Attorney’s Office emphasizes that an Indictment contains allegations only and that Merrill is presumed innocent until and unless convicted of a crime. If convicted of all charges, Merrill faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years of imprisonment, and a maximum sentence of 30 years of imprisonment.” [DOJ]
