Jason Andrew Lytton is a Utah man from Riverton who was arrested in 2021 after police found more than 1,000 images of child sexual abuse material in his iCloud account. Investigators later accused Lytton of secretly recording a minor without her knowledge. Although he was initially arrested for investigation of 100 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, prosecutors ultimately filed 10 exploitation counts, an obstruction charge and two voyeurism charges. Lytton later pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of voyeurism.

Lytton’s Wife Discovered Hidden Folder While Setting Up Venmo Account. In September 2021, Lytton asked his wife, Ashley Lytton, to help set up a Venmo account for his business using his iCloud credentials. He soon called back and urgently told her to stop. Suspicious of his reaction, Ashley continued looking through the account and discovered a hidden folder containing hundreds of inappropriate images of children. [Good Morning America]
Police Found More Than 1,000 Images In Lytton’s iCloud Account. Riverton police obtained a search warrant for Lytton’s iCloud account and said investigators discovered more than 1,000 suspected child sexual abuse images. The original booking affidavit described the material as involving girls estimated to be between 8 and 15 years old and said investigators also located videos. [KSL]
Later Investigation Identified More Than 1,500 Photos. ABC News Studios’ later examination of the case reported that investigators ultimately uncovered more than 1,500 photographs involving child sexual abuse material after examining Lytton’s account. [Good Morning America]
Lytton Allegedly Admitted He “Had A Problem” After Material Was Discovered. The person who initially discovered the hidden folder contacted Lytton’s brother, who then contacted Lytton. According to the police affidavit, Lytton subsequently called the person who had accessed the account and acknowledged that he had a problem while asking for a chance to explain before anyone else was contacted. Investigators Discovered Lytton Had Secretly Recorded A Minor. In addition to downloaded child sexual abuse material, investigators discovered homemade recordings involving a minor close to the family. The investigation ultimately established that Lytton had secretly photographed and recorded a minor without her consent, conduct that resulted in separate voyeurism charges. [KSL]
Recordings Involved Lytton’s Teenage Stepdaughter. The Betrayal: A Father’s Secret investigation revealed that the secretly recorded minor was Ashley Lytton’s teenage daughter and Lytton’s stepdaughter, Avaya. Ashley Lytton Helped Police Arrange Husband’s Arrest. After reporting what she had discovered to Riverton police, Ashley agreed to arrange a meeting with Lytton at a Walmart parking lot under the pretense that they would discuss their relationship. Lytton Initially Arrested For Investigation Of 100 Exploitation Counts. Riverton police arrested Lytton in September 2021 and booked him into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of 100 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. [KSL]
Prosecutors Ultimately Filed 13 Criminal Charges Against Lytton. When formal charges were filed, Lytton faced 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, each a second-degree felony, one count of obstructing justice and two Class A misdemeanor counts of voyeurism. [KSL]
Prosecutor Said Secret Recording Represented Escalation Beyond Possessing Images. At sentencing, Deputy District Attorney Samuel Sutton said authorities had no evidence Lytton had engaged in direct sexual contact with a child, but prosecutors viewed the secret recording of a minor as behavior that went beyond simply possessing existing abuse material and raised concerns about escalation. Lytton Pleaded Guilty To One Exploitation Charge And Two Voyeurism Counts. On September 9, 2022, Lytton pleaded guilty to one second-degree felony count of sexual exploitation of a minor and two Class A misdemeanor voyeurism charges. The plea included admissions that he possessed nude images of minor girls and secretly photographed and recorded a minor without consent. [KSL]
Remaining Charges Were Dismissed Under Plea Agreement. Lytton’s plea agreement substantially reduced the number of charges he faced and eliminated the prospect of a trial on the original exploitation, obstruction and voyeurism case. [KSL]
Jason Lytton Sentence
Judge Sentenced Lytton To One Year In County Jail. Third District Judge Amber M. Mettler sentenced Lytton to one year in jail on each voyeurism conviction, with the sentences running concurrently. With credit applied to his sentence, later reporting described the remaining jail term as 329 days. [KSL]
One-To-15-Year Prison Sentence On Exploitation Charge Was Suspended. Mettler imposed a prison term of one to 15 years for sexual exploitation of a minor but suspended the sentence on the condition that Lytton successfully complete four years of supervised probation. Lytton Barred From Unapproved Internet Access. Conditions imposed by the court included compliance with sex-offender requirements and a prohibition on internet access unless specifically approved. His treatment requirements also included sex-offender programming. [KSL]
Lytton Apologized To His Family At Sentencing. During sentencing, Lytton accepted responsibility and apologized for the harm he caused his family and the children depicted in the material he possessed. His defense attorney argued that community-based sex-offender treatment was appropriate, while the judge emphasized the seriousness of both the exploitation and voyeurism offenses. [KSL]
