Yearby Accused Of Attacking Greg Chew. “Greg Chew, a longtime San Francisco resident who as served on several city commissions, said he was attacked at approximately 7:38 p.m. on Aug. 2 at Folsom Street and 3rd Street, not far from his home in the South Market area. Six days later, the San Francisco Police Department announced on Sunday that 34-year-old city resident Derrick Yearby was identified as the suspect and placed under arrest. Yearby was transported to San Francisco County Jail where he was booked on charges aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, elder abuse and great bodily injury enhancement. So far, he is not charged with a hate crime over the attack. The sheriff’s office website lists his bail at $50,000.” [Fox]
Chew Attacked On Aug 2 2022. “Chew was reportedly walking along Third and Folsom Streets at around 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 2 when Yearby purportedly jumped off his bike to knock Chew to the ground before punching his face. Recalling the incident, Chew said he did not have enough time to defend himself with the pepper spray in his pocket, adding that nothing was stolen from him after he was knocked out. Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle on Saturday, Chew admitted that he does not know what happened during the incident. All he can remember is blacking out on the sidewalk, being helped by passersby and being taken to California Pacific Medical Center on Van Ness Avenue after authorities arrived.” [Yahoo]
Anti-Racism Protests Followed Attacks. “Protesters disrupted traffic and marched down busy Columbus Avenue in San Francisco Sunday afternoon chanting “fight Asian hate” and “justice for our elders.” Many recent anti-Asian-hate marches have stayed on sidewalks or within parks but rally organizers said playing nice, following rules and maintaining the “model minority” image have got them nowhere. They’re changing their tactics, becoming disruptive and aggressive to make their demands heard.” [CBS]
SFPD: Yearby Arrested After Matching Description Of Attacker. “On Sunday, August 7, 2022, at approximately 11:28 a.m., Tenderloin Station officers observed a male in the area of 8th Street and Market Street who matched the suspect’s description. Officers detained the suspect, who was identified as 34-year-old San Francisco resident Derrick Yearby. Officers developed probable cause to arrest Yearby. Yearby was later transported to San Francisco County Jail where he was booked on charges of aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury (243(d) PC), assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury (245(a)(4) PC), elder abuse (368(b)(1) PC, and great bodily injury enhancement (12022.7(c) PC).” [SFPD]
SFPD: Photos, Videos Helped Arrest. “On Sunday morning, police took 34-year-old Derrick Yearby into custody in connection with the Aug. 2 attack. “Fortunately in this incident, there was good photos and video,” said SFPD public information officer Kathryn Winters. “Officers in this incident were able to locate and identify this suspect fairly quickly. So some great officers out there in the field doing good police work.”” [ABC]
Chew Praised “Swift Arrest” In Case. “Sunday afternoon, SFPD informed me an arrest had been made. Officers from SFPD’s Tenderloin station used surveillance video and images collected from nearby to locate and arrest 34-year-old Derrick Yearby. When I checked in on Greg Monday, he was relieved. “I was not expecting that. It was such a swift arrest, I was quite delighted it happened,” he said via Zoom, wearing a bright shirt and donning his signature round glasses once again.” [ABC]
