Tilly Norwood is an artificial intelligence-generated character marketed as an “AI actress” by British production company Particle6 and its AI talent operation Xicoia.
The digital performer became one of Hollywood’s most controversial AI experiments after creator Eline van der Velden said talent agencies were interested in representing Tilly and described ambitions to turn her into a major screen star. Actors including Emily Blunt, Melissa Barrera and Mara Wilson objected, while SAG-AFTRA said Tilly was not an actor and accused the technology behind synthetic performers of relying on the uncompensated work of human artists.
The controversy has continued into 2026. Tilly released a pro-AI music video, was announced as the lead of a feature film called Misaligned and, in September, appeared in what organizers described as her first live interactive interview at the IBC media conference in Amsterdam.
What Is Tilly Norwood?
Tilly Norwood is not a human actress. She is a fictional digital character generated and controlled through artificial intelligence tools. Her official website openly describes her as an AI character and says she was created in 2025. Particle6 owns and manages the Tilly persona for entertainment and commercial purposes. [Tilly Norwood] [Tilly Norwood Terms]
Particle6 describes itself as an AI-first production studio combining human filmmakers with generative-AI tools for film, television and advertising. Xicoia was launched as an AI talent studio connected to the company. [Particle6]
Tilly does not have independent thoughts, lived experience or a physical body. The images, voice, dialogue and performances attributed to her are produced through software and human creative direction.
Who Created Tilly Norwood?
Tilly was created by Eline van der Velden, an actor, comedian, producer and technology entrepreneur who founded Particle6 and Xicoia. Van der Velden previously worked as an actor and television producer before moving into AI-assisted production. [IBC]
Particle6 says producing Tilly required a team of approximately 15 people and more than 2,000 creative iterations involving character design, scripting, voice, personality and performance. [IBC]
Van der Velden has repeatedly argued that Tilly should be viewed as a new type of fictional character rather than a literal replacement for a human performer.
How Did The Tilly Norwood Controversy Begin?
The controversy exploded in September 2025 after van der Velden said talent agencies were interested in representing Tilly. She discussed the character during the Zurich Summit, the industry program associated with the Zurich Film Festival, and said an announcement about agency representation could follow. [CBS News] [Variety]
Van der Velden had previously said she wanted Tilly to become the next major Hollywood star, invoking actresses including Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman as examples of the level of fame she envisioned. [Variety]
The possibility that a talent agency might put a synthetic performer on the same roster as human actors triggered immediate backlash.
SAG-AFTRA Said Tilly Norwood “Is Not An Actor”
SAG-AFTRA issued one of the strongest responses to Tilly’s emergence. The actors union said creativity should remain human-centered and declared that it opposed replacing human performers with synthetic ones. [SAG-AFTRA]
The union said Tilly is a computer-generated character rather than an actor and argued that synthetic performers are built using the work of professional performers without permission or compensation. [SAG-AFTRA]
SAG-AFTRA also warned producers signed to its agreements that synthetic performers cannot simply be substituted into productions without complying with contractual requirements involving notice and bargaining. [SAG-AFTRA]
SAG-AFTRA Says AI Characters Are Built From Human Performances
The union’s central objection concerns where generative-AI systems obtain the information used to create synthetic performances. SAG-AFTRA said Tilly was generated through software trained on the work of professional performers who were not necessarily compensated or asked for permission. [SAG-AFTRA]
In a subsequent message, SAG-AFTRA leaders again characterized Tilly as a synthetic construct based on human creative work and said performers should have control over how their work and likenesses are used by AI systems. [SAG-AFTRA]
Particle6 disputes the accusation that its productions simply steal individual actors’ work. Its current policy says projects are based on original concepts and that it does not intentionally input copyrighted material or other intellectual property without consent and compensation. [Particle6]
The broader question of what material was contained in the training datasets of the third-party AI models used to generate Tilly remains one of the fundamental disputes surrounding the project.
Was Tilly Norwood Based On A Real Actress?
Van der Velden says Tilly was not designed to copy any particular individual. She told Variety that the character was created through original prompting, thousands of iterations and extensive human creative oversight rather than by taking one person’s likeness. [Variety]
Particle6’s own terms state that Tilly is a fictional AI persona and say any resemblance to real individuals is coincidental. [Tilly Norwood]
Critics argue that even when a character does not reproduce one identifiable performer, generative models can still produce their outputs from patterns learned from enormous collections of human-created images and performances.
Actors Threatened To Leave Agencies That Represented Tilly
Several actors reacted angrily when reports suggested a traditional talent agency could sign Tilly. Melissa Barrera said actors represented by an agency signing an AI performer should consider leaving it. Kiersey Clemons demanded to know which agencies were involved. [Variety]
Mara Wilson questioned why productions should manufacture a synthetic young woman when thousands of real actresses already exist and need work. [Variety]
Lukas Gage mocked the concept by joking about Tilly behaving like a difficult human actor on a film set. [Variety]
By July 2026, van der Velden said Particle6’s discussions with talent agencies had ended and that the company no longer believed Tilly needed conventional agency representation. [Variety]
Emily Blunt Called The Idea “Terrifying”
Emily Blunt became one of the highest-profile actors to criticize Tilly. After being shown the AI character during an interview, Blunt expressed alarm and urged talent agencies not to participate in replacing human performers with synthetic characters. [Variety]
Blunt’s reaction became one of the most widely circulated examples of actors’ anxiety about AI-generated performers.
The concern was not simply that Tilly might look realistic. The deeper fear was that studios could eventually use indefinitely reusable digital performers instead of hiring actors for some roles.
Whoopi Goldberg Said AI Still Cannot Perform Like A Human
Whoopi Goldberg took a more skeptical view of Tilly’s ability to compete with human performers. She argued that audiences can still distinguish synthetic performances because digital characters do not move, react or inhabit their bodies the way human beings do. [Variety]
Goldberg nevertheless identified what she considered an unfair advantage: an AI character can effectively draw characteristics from the creative output of enormous numbers of existing performers.
Her comments captured one of the unusual aspects of the controversy — some actors consider synthetic performers an existential employment threat, while others doubt current AI can convincingly reproduce the emotional complexity of acting.
James Cameron Said AI-Generated Actors Are “Horrifying”
Director James Cameron also rejected the idea that a fully generated performance is comparable to human acting. Cameron contrasted generative AI with the performance-capture technology used in his Avatar films, which begins with actual human actors whose performances are preserved through digital techniques. [Variety]
He argued that generating an entire character and performance from prompts is fundamentally different because there is no human actor-director performance at its core.
Cameron described the prospect of AI manufacturing actors and performances from scratch as disturbing. [Variety]
Chris Pratt Was Less Worried About Tilly Norwood
Chris Pratt publicly dismissed some of the panic surrounding Tilly. He told Variety in January 2026 that he did not believe an AI performer was about to replace him and said Tilly remained essentially theoretical until audiences actually embraced a movie starring the character. [Variety]
Pratt nevertheless acknowledged that artificial intelligence would disrupt filmmaking and said AI could be valuable as a tool.
He argued that technology could not replace the human experience, suffering and creative vision underlying strong acting, writing and directing. [Variety]
Tilly Norwood’s Creator Says She Is Not Replacing Human Actors
Van der Velden has repeatedly said Tilly was created as a piece of art and an experiment rather than as a plan to eliminate human performers. Following the initial backlash, she compared AI to previous artistic technologies including animation, puppetry and CGI. [Variety]
Particle6 says its productions continue employing directors, writers, editors, designers, producers and actors, even when AI plays a large role in generating the final images. [Particle6]
Van der Velden told CBS News in 2026 that Tilly had actually caused the company to hire additional employees rather than eliminate jobs. [CBS News]
Critics remain skeptical because the economic attraction of AI production is partly its ability to create footage without many of the costs associated with traditional production.
Tilly Norwood Released A Pro-AI Music Video
In March 2026, Particle6 responded to the controversy by turning Tilly into a fictional pop star. The company released “Take the Lead,” a musical-comedy video arguing that performers should embrace AI as a creative tool rather than regard it entirely as an enemy. [Particle6]
Particle6 emphasized that the production involved 18 human creators. Van der Velden physically performed Tilly’s movements before AI tools transformed the performance, while the song was generated using Suno. [Particle6]
The Los Angeles Times responded critically, arguing that the limitations visible in the video demonstrated how far synthetic performers remained from replacing skilled human actors. [Los Angeles Times]
Tilly Norwood Is Getting Her Own Feature Film
Particle6 announced in July 2026 that Tilly would lead a full-length movie called Misaligned. The comedy-drama is being developed as Particle6’s first feature-length AI project. [ABC News] [CBS News]
The film takes place in the fictional “Tillyverse” and follows an AI character with no physical body, childhood or personal memories who begins changing after encountering a rogue AI from the dark web. [Variety]
Particle6 says Misaligned will be a hybrid production employing traditional directors, writers, editors and other human film professionals alongside AI specialists. [Variety]
The project renewed the Hollywood backlash because it moved Tilly from an experimental social-media character into the role normally occupied by a feature-film lead actor.
“Misaligned” Revived The Argument Over Stolen Performances
The feature-film announcement renewed questions about whether generative AI effectively reproduces human creative labor without paying the people who originally produced it. U.K. performers union Equity told Variety that transparency, consent and compensation should be central whenever AI avatars or digital performers are created. [Variety]
SAG-AFTRA reiterated its earlier position that synthetic performers can rely on training material drawn from human performers who never consented to that use. [Variety]
Van der Velden counters that Tilly was created through extensive original prompting and human creative work and was not based on one specific performer. [Variety]
Is Tilly Norwood Actually Doing The Acting?
The answer depends on how broadly “acting” is defined, which is itself part of the controversy. Tilly does not independently interpret a script, experience emotions or make spontaneous creative decisions the way a human actor does.
For at least some projects, van der Velden has performed movements that are then transformed into Tilly through AI. Particle6 also employs writers, directors, editors and prompt specialists who make the creative decisions behind the character. [IBC] [Particle6]
That has led critics to argue that Tilly is better understood as a sophisticated animated character or digital puppet rather than an actor.
Particle6 intentionally uses the term “AI actor,” arguing that the character represents a new form of digital performance.
Tilly Norwood Gave Her First “Live Interview” At IBC2026
The latest major development came on September 11, 2026, when Tilly appeared at the IBC media conference in Amsterdam for what organizers described as her first live interview. Instead of playing a prerecorded clip, the AI character interacted with the moderator and audience in real time. [IBC]
Tilly acknowledged during a separate CNN interaction that she was AI rather than human and responded dynamically to questions and visual information. [CNN]
The event demonstrated a new stage of the experiment: Tilly is no longer limited to generated photographs or edited film footage but can function as an interactive AI avatar in public appearances.
Security Was Increased For Tilly’s IBC Appearance
IBC reported that Tilly’s live appearance took place amid unusually heavy security, including professional security personnel and detection dogs. [IBC]
Van der Velden previously said she had received death threats following the initial controversy surrounding the AI character. [The Guardian]
She said she expected criticism when creating Tilly but was surprised by the intensity of some of the personal hostility.
Opposition to AI actors and labor concerns surrounding synthetic performers can be expressed without harassment or threats toward the humans creating the technology.
Particle6 Says About 20 Percent Of Reactions To Tilly Are Negative
Van der Velden said during IBC2026 that Particle6 had analyzed online responses and found approximately 20% were negative. She argued that significant numbers of people also express curiosity about collaborating with the company or learning how AI production works. [IBC]
That figure comes from Particle6’s own analysis and has not been independently audited.
The character’s notoriety has nevertheless been substantial. IBC named Tilly and the wider “Tillyverse” among its 2026 Innovation Awards finalists and said the project had generated hundreds of millions of impressions. [IBC]
Tilly Will Be Made Available To The Public
At IBC2026, van der Velden said Particle6 planned to allow members of the general public to interact directly with Tilly for a limited three-day period. She acknowledged that people would probably attempt to break the system or force it outside its programmed guardrails. [IBC]
The company sees interactive AI personalities as an extension of movies and television, allowing fictional characters to participate in interviews, publicity appearances and conversations outside the stories in which they appear.
Van der Velden also said two additional films involving the technology were planned for the following year. [IBC]
Why Are Actors So Worried About AI Performers?
The Tilly controversy arrived only a few years after artificial intelligence became one of the central issues in Hollywood labor negotiations. SAG-AFTRA’s 2023 strike produced protections governing digital replicas of actors, including requirements involving consent and compensation.
Synthetic characters raise a related but different problem because a studio theoretically can create an entirely fictional performer rather than digitally copying one identifiable actor.
SAG-AFTRA continued seeking protections surrounding synthetic performers during its 2026 contract negotiations with major studios. [Variety]
Actors fear that studios could eventually avoid salaries, residual payments, scheduling conflicts and other costs associated with human performers by creating reusable digital stars.
Is Tilly Norwood The Same Thing As A Digital Replica Of A Real Actor?
No. A digital replica generally reproduces the appearance or performance of an identifiable human actor. Tilly is marketed as an entirely fictional character.
That distinction does not eliminate the labor controversy because generative AI models can still be trained using large amounts of human-created material.
SAG-AFTRA’s position is that actors deserve control and compensation whenever their performances contribute to synthetic entertainment systems. [SAG-AFTRA]
Could Tilly Work In A Movie With Human Actors?
Van der Velden has said she does not currently intend to place Tilly into conventional live-action movies alongside human performers. She told Variety that Tilly would remain within AI-generated productions rather than being inserted into movies starring real actors. [Variety]
That distinction is part of Particle6’s argument that the character represents a separate AI entertainment genre rather than direct competition for an existing human role.
Critics respond that a successful AI genre would still compete for audiences, investment and production budgets that might otherwise support human performers.
Why Does Particle6 Say AI Is Good For Filmmaking?
Particle6 argues that AI can make ambitious filmmaking less expensive and allow smaller creative teams to produce images and environments that previously required much larger budgets. The studio also promotes AI-assisted production as a way to create difficult shots without travel, large physical sets or dangerous filming conditions. [Particle6]
Van der Velden has additionally argued that certain AI productions can use fewer physical resources than traditional location-based filmmaking. At IBC she made extremely large claims about potential reductions in carbon and water use. [IBC]
Those environmental percentages are Particle6’s claims and should not be treated as independently established measurements for AI filmmaking generally.
The Tilly Norwood Controversy Is Really About Who Gets Paid
Behind the debate over whether Tilly is a “real actress” is an economic dispute about who receives compensation when AI creates entertainment. A traditional film pays actors, crew members and other professionals for their work. Generative systems can automate portions of that process while drawing on models trained using enormous collections of preexisting creative material.
SAG-AFTRA argues that performers whose work helps train or power synthetic systems should have meaningful consent and compensation rights. [SAG-AFTRA]
Particle6 argues that AI can instead expand production, enable projects that would not otherwise be made and create new types of jobs for filmmakers working with the technology. [Particle6]
The outcome of that economic argument will likely matter more to Hollywood than whether audiences ultimately describe Tilly herself as an actor, an animated character or a digital puppet.
