Misty Gomez And Antonio Garcia: Geoff Bernardi Murder Case Explained

Misty Gomez, 32, of Dinuba, California, and her husband Antonio Garcia, 40, of Tulare, have been charged in connection with the killing of 37-year-old Clovis educator Geoffrey “Geoff” Bernardi. Police say Bernardi was Gomez’s boyfriend even though Gomez was married to Garcia. After an investigation lasting approximately eight months, U.S. Marshals arrested Gomez and Garcia in Mexico on August 19, 2026, and they were returned to California to face murder charges.

The Killing Of Geoff Bernardi

Geoff Bernardi was severely beaten near a Clovis canal on December 18, 2025. Clovis police said officers responded shortly before 1 a.m. to the area of the Dry Creek canal near Barstow and Peach avenues and found Bernardi suffering from severe injuries following an aggravated battery. He was transported to a hospital, where he died two days later. [GV Wire]

Bernardi was a 37-year-old educator who worked for the Clovis Unified School District. He worked in career technical education and helped with theater productions. His obituary said he had found a career he loved working as an AV Design Tech for the school district. [ABC30] [Obituary]

Police initially searched for an unidentified attacker. Gomez was described by investigators as the only witness to the attack. She told investigators the person who attacked Bernardi was wearing a black puffer jacket and hoodie. [ABC30]

The Investigation

Police later determined that Bernardi’s killing was not a random attack. In January 2026, Clovis police announced that detectives had identified a person of interest and said the evidence indicated Bernardi had not been attacked at random. Investigators eventually identified both Misty Gomez and Antonio Garcia as suspects. Clovis police said evidence discovered during the investigation, communications between Gomez and Garcia, and additional detective work led investigators to the married couple. Authorities have not yet publicly released the complete evidence against them or a detailed account of how prosecutors allege the killing was carried out. [Clovis Police]

Detectives discovered that Gomez was dating Bernardi while married to Garcia. Police described Gomez as Bernardi’s girlfriend but said she was also married to Garcia. Bernardi’s mother, Erin Adams, later said her son did not know Gomez was married and believed he had found the woman he wanted to marry. [ABC30]

Gomez And Garcia Arrested In Mexico

Gomez and Garcia were tracked to Mexico after allegedly hiding there for months. Clovis police said investigators used technology to locate the couple after they left the United States. Gomez and Garcia were returned to California after their arrests. They were initially booked into Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County before being transported to Fresno. They were booked into the Fresno County Jail on August 24, 2026. [ABC30]

Murder Charges

A criminal complaint accuses both Misty Gomez and Antonio Garcia of murdering Bernardi. ABC30 obtained the complaint filed in Fresno County and reported that prosecutors allege Gomez and Garcia “did unlawfully, and with malice aforethought” murder Geoffrey Scott Bernardi. [ABC30]

Gomez and Garcia were expected to make their first Fresno court appearance on August 25, 2026. The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office told ABC30 that the two defendants were expected to appear for arraignment Tuesday following their transfer to the Fresno County Jail. [ABC30]

Bernardi’s Family And Gomez

Bernardi’s mother said Gomez contacted her after the attack and later went to the hospital with the family. Erin Adams told ABC30 that Gomez called her on the night Bernardi was attacked and informed her that he had been badly beaten. Adams said Gomez was also with Bernardi’s family at the hospital while he was dying. [ABC30]

Adams said the family quickly became suspicious of Gomez. Adams told ABC30 that within two days of the attack, Bernardi’s family believed Gomez was involved. That allegation represents the family’s account; police have not publicly disclosed the complete evidentiary trail that ultimately led detectives to Gomez and Garcia. [ABC30]

Gomez’s Children

Police say Gomez left the United States with her two young daughters. Clovis police said Gomez took two children from previous relationships with her when she fled to Mexico. Both children had been reported missing from Dinuba since April 2026. [Clovis Police]

The children remained in Mexico after Gomez was returned to the United States. ABC30 reported on August 25 that the girls were in the custody of Mexico’s Desarrollo Integral de la Familia, or DIF, while authorities worked through the process necessary to return them to their families in the United States. Geoff Bernardi’s Organ Donation

Bernardi became an organ donor following his death. His family said Bernardi’s organs ultimately helped save seven lives, with additional people benefiting from tissue donation. His mother described the donations as a positive result arising from the tragedy of his death. [ABC30] [Obituary]
