In a speech on the floor of the House, Cawthorn incorrectly claimed that Thomas Jefferson made the quote “facts are stubborn things.” It was a quote from John Adams.
Cawthorn made many historical mistakes in 2021. From CNN political fact checker Daniel Dale: “In the last 10 months, Cawthorn has wrongly said in a speech that James Madison signed the Declaration of Independence, wrongly said Congress voted to have Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation, and now in another speech attributed a famous John Adams line to Jefferson.”
