James Franco Sexual Misconduct Allegations Explained

Tither-Kaplan alleged that while filming an orgy scene for Franco’s movie The Long Home, actresses wore clear plastic guards over their genitals while Franco simulated oral sex. She said Franco removed the guards from actresses and continued performing the simulated sex act without them. Tither-Kaplan Said Women Were Asked To Perform An Unscripted Topless Scene. She said she and other actresses were subsequently asked to appear topless in an unscripted sequence while dancing around Franco wearing animal skulls. Tither-Kaplan Had Agreed To Perform Nudity In Some Franco Productions. The controversy did not rest on a claim that all of her nudity was unauthorized. Tither-Kaplan acknowledged signing nudity agreements for roles she considered significant career opportunities. Violet Paley Allegation

Violet Paley Said Franco Pressured Her To Perform Oral Sex In A Car. Paley told the Los Angeles Times that after she and Franco had begun a romantic relationship, he exposed himself while they were sitting in her car and pushed or nudged her head toward his penis after she indicated she wanted to postpone the sexual activity. Paley And Franco Later Had A Consensual Sexual Relationship. Paley acknowledged that the two continued a consensual relationship after the alleged incident. She nevertheless said the initial encounter disturbed her and that the disparity in power between a famous actor and an aspiring filmmaker affected how she reacted. Hilary Dusome And Natalie Chmiel Allegations

Two Former Students Said Franco Became Angry When Women Would Not Go Topless. Hilary Dusome and Natalie Chmiel described a shoot at a strip club in which actresses wore lingerie and masks. Both women said Franco asked which performers wanted to take their shirts off. According to Dusome, Franco stormed away after nobody volunteered; Chmiel similarly recalled him becoming visibly angry. The Women Said Their Desire For Acting Opportunities Created A Power Imbalance. Chmiel said aspiring actresses were eager to work and become part of larger projects and accused Franco of exploiting that eagerness. Katie Ryan Said Students Were Led To Believe Sexual Compliance Could Lead To Roles. Ryan, who studied with Franco at Playhouse West and Studio 4, alleged that Franco repeatedly created the impression that professional opportunities might be available if actresses performed sexual acts or removed clothing for his projects. Franco Said The Accusations Circulating Against Him Were “Not Accurate.” Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in January 2018, Franco said he supported women having the ability to speak publicly but denied the accuracy of the allegations he had seen. Studio 4 Acting School

Studio 4 Offered A “Sex Scenes” Program. Former students said the program was promoted as an opportunity to learn how intimate scenes were filmed professionally. Students had to audition and pay additional money to participate, and the later lawsuit alleged that women were encouraged to appear nude or partially nude and pushed toward increasingly explicit simulated sexual situations. Former Students Sue James Franco

Sarah Tither-Kaplan And Toni Gaal Filed A Class-Action Lawsuit In 2019. The former students sued Franco, Vince Jolivette, Jay Davis, Rabbit Bandini Productions and entities associated with Studio 4 in Los Angeles Superior Court. Their complaint included allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, sex discrimination, intimidation and fraudulent business practices. [LA Times]

The Lawsuit Alleged Studio 4 Created A Pipeline Of Young Women For Exploitation. Tither-Kaplan and Gaal alleged that the school used promises of career opportunities to encourage female students to participate in nudity and sexually explicit material and that women who cooperated could believe they would receive preferential professional opportunities.
