Donald Trump 2021 Impeachment Trial

Former President Donald Trump is on trial in the U.S. Senate after being impeached in the House of Representatives. Trump is accused of inciting the riot that attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

In the case presented by House impeachment managers, they accused Trump of being “singularly responsible” for the attack.

Democrats asked Trump to appear in person and testify at his trial, but Trump declined.

Over 370 congressional aides have called on Congress to convict Trump. They note the “attack on our workplace” he incited. They also write, “for our sake, and the sake of the country, we ask that they vote to convict the former president and bar him from ever holding office again.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) claimed that he would resign his seat in the House if asked to defend Trump at his trial.

144 constitutional lawyers said Trump’s “First Amendment” defense of his remarks inciting the Capitol attack is “legally frivolous.”
