Joe Biden will be inaugurated as the forty-sixth president of the United States on January 20 2021.
After the January 2021 attack on the US Capitol, security concerns and measures for the inauguration have increased.
National Mall Closure
The entire National Mall will be closed for Biden’s inauguration. “The extraordinary closure is the latest in a series of security measures to harden the city against the type of violence that rocked the Capitol on Jan. 6,” the Washington Post reported.
Biden Train Tour Canceled Due To Security Concerns
Joe Biden had originally planned to take a train to the inauguration, due to his long affiliation with Amtrak which he rode from Delaware to Washington while he was a senator. But after he was briefed by the FBI and Secret Service about security concerns, the train trip was canceled.
National Guard Deployment
Thousands of National Guard Troops were deployed to Washington DC to secure the capital city ahead of the inauguration. The National Guard troops came from Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Boogaloo Inauguration Threats
US intelligence agencies have warned that the extremist Boogaloo movement may pose a threat to the inauguration. A joint bulletin distributed by the National Counterterrorism Center and the Justice and Homeland Security Departments says Boogaloo members “may exploit the aftermath of the Capitol breach by conducting attacks to destabilize and force a climactic conflict in the United States.”
Using the social network Telegram in a channel called “Boogaloo Intel Drop,” members of the group called for murdering police officers. They have cited the death of Ashli Babbitt, a pro-Trump activist shot and killed in the January 2021 attack on the Capitol as a motivation.
The Secret Service has also issued a warning about possible Boogaloo threats to the inauguration, citing calls for members to take weapons to gatherings on January 20th.
QAnon Inauguration Threats
Donald Trump supporters, particularly people involved in the QAnon conspiracy theory, have been plotting attacks related to the Biden inauguration. They reportedly plan to converge on state capitals and Washington DC in hopes of disrupting the inauguration.
