Producer J.J. Abrams is producing a reboot of the Superman movie franchise through his “Bad Robot” production company. The movie will come from DC Films and WarnerMedia. Writer Ta-Nehisi Coates will be writing the movie. The role of Superman/Clark Kent has not yet been cast.
Who Is JJ Abrams/Bad Robot?
JJ Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is well known for producing TV shows like Lost and Alias. Bad Robot also produced the reboot of Star Trek, which was also directed by Abrams.
Who Is Ta-Nehisi Coates?
Coates is currently the writer of Marvel’s Captain America comic book, and before that has written Black Panther. He is best known as a political writer and his book Between the World and Me was a bestseller.
Coates also wrote the fantasy novel, The Water Dancer.
Will The Movie Be Part of the DCEU?
It has not yet been announced whether the movie will be a part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) but it is unlikely. The DCEU, commonly known as the “Snyderverse” due to director Zack Snyder, has been criticized for is dark tone and the underperformance of existing movies like Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice) and Justice League.
In all likelihood the Superman reboot will not be part of the DCEU but it remains to be seen.
Will Superman Be Black?
Due to the involvement of Ta-Nehisi Coates and his popular writings on race, many are speculating that the Superman in the reboot could be Black.
Nothing firm has been announced, but there is a “Black Superman” that already exists in the DC comic book universe. Within the multiverse of DC Comics, Earth-23 is the home of Calvin Ellis, who happens to be President of the United States… and Superman. Calvin Ellis is Black.
