A possible Trump effect has begun rippling through the media economy after the conclusion of the 2016 presidential election.
Major toy brand Lego has announced that it will no longer advertise with The Daily Mail, a right-wing British newspaper that has often taken the side of Trump and right-wing nationalists like Nigel Farage in England. The Daily Mail has also been slammed for misleading headlines about the refugee crisis as a result of the Syrian civil war.
A campaign called Stop Funding Hate has begun asking advertisers to drop their accounts with media outlets that promote “hatred, discrimination and demonization.”
In response to the campaign, Lego released a statement on Twitter: “We have finished the agreement with the Daily Mail and are not planning any future promotional activity with the newspaper.”
Previously, Lego had run advertising and even giveaways for its toy products in the right-wing newspaper.
Stop Funding Hate praised Lego’s decision: “Stop Funding Hate welcomes the decision from Lego. We are asking brands to listen to their customers when they tell them they want to stop funding hate, and that is what they’ve done.”
