GOP Lawmaker Wants Porn Producers Sued For Emotional Damages

A bill being pushed by state senator Todd Weiler (R) in Utah would allow people to sue the creators of porn for inflicting emotional and psychological damage.

Weiler previously generated national headlines by promoting a resolution that called pornography a public health crisis.

Speaking to the Salt Lake Tribune, Weiler said, “Right now porn is available without any warnings and labeling, without any protections online. This would just open the valve for a cause of action. Let these attorneys go after these cases.”

Weiler is apparently unconcerned that adult films are protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and believes his legislation is an essential part of a long-term strategy by the right to attack porn. He has compared the supposed harm of pornography to lung cancer caused by cigarettes and the successful lawsuits against the tobacco industry after decades of misleading about the impact to public health of those products.
