First Day Of New GOP Congress A Huge Mess

Republicans started the first day of the Trump-Ryan Congress with a huge mistake that turned into a complete failure for the leadership of Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI).

Republicans decided that the time was right to introduce new rules that would effectively gut and destroy the independent Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). OCE was put in place by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) when she was Speaker in 2008 and had to deal with an avalanche of corrupt practices by the Republican Party.

Led by Ryan, Republicans attempted to sneak the modifications of OCE into a larger set of rules affecting how business is conducted in the House of Representatives.

Instead, when reports surfaced that this was happening, calls started pouring in to Capitol Hill and the move received widespread condemnation, with even at least one right-wing group criticizing the move.

Soon, an emergency meeting was called and Republicans backed off (and many in the media inaccurately gave credit to a Donald Trump tweet that simply criticized the timing of the move, not the substance), leading to egg on the face for the Republican leadership.
