President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe participated in a joint ceremony on December 27 to honor the fallen at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Obama and Abe both laid wreaths at the site of the USS Arizona, which was sunk on December 7, 1941 by Japanese fighter planes in a surprise attack.
Obama and Abe participated in the ceremony in part of the ongoing reconciliation between the United States and Japan, who were opponents in World War II. Previously, Obama visited the site of the first U.S. atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima, Japan.
