Bernie Sanders: Trump Got Duped On Carrier Deal

Donald Trump is no great dealmaker, and in his first big gesture after the election, Senator Bernie Sanders says he got rolled by Carrier and its parent company, United Technologies.

Writing in the Washington Post, the Senator and former presidential candidate writes, “United Technologies took Trump hostage and won.”

Sanders points out that “In exchange for allowing United Technologies to continue to offshore more than 1,000 jobs, Trump will reportedly give the company tax and regulatory favors that the corporation has sought.”

Trump previously said Carrier should pay a “damn tax” and that companies who want to take their business offshore and sell their products back to Americans should face tariffs. Sanders notes, “Instead of a damn tax, the company will be rewarded with a damn tax cut. Wow! How’s that for standing up to corporate greed? How’s that for punishing corporations that shut down in the United States and move abroad?”

Sanders goes on to point out that now that Trump caved in to Carrier, companies will now line up to get the same sort of corrupt sweetheart deal.

He adds, “Trump has endangered the jobs of workers who were previously safe in the United States. Why? Because he has signaled to every corporation in America that they can threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for business-friendly tax benefits and incentives.”

Sanders rails against Trump for betraying his campaign rhetoric, treating corporations hurting the American worker with “kid gloves” instead of facing them down and shaming them.

Signaling to Democrats and other progressives that Trump has already gone off course he concludes, “If Donald Trump won’t stand up for America’s working class, we must.”
