Why Trump’s Education Secretary Pick Is A Threat To Gay Teens

Betsy DeVos, Donald Trump’s pick to run the U.S. Department of Education, poses a threat to the lives of gay teenagers across the United States.

The DeVos family, major funders of conservative issues, has donated money to numerous anti-gay causes. Most notorious of these, the DeVos family has given money to groups pushing so-called “conversion therapy.”

Conversion therapy has been thoroughly discredited as an attempt to change the sexual orientation of a person, and has more often than not led to more harm than good particularly when children are the target of the practice.

Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, told Politico, “The DeVos family has a long, well-documented history of funding organizations dedicated to undermining and restricting the rights of LGBTQ people.”

Under President Obama, the Education Department has issued guidance to schools to cover LGBT students under their anti-bullying policies. Under a Trump regime, DeVos could rescind this protection being offered to teenagers at one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, when suicide is such a dangerous and looming option.
