Donald Trump is going to lose the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by at least 2.2 million votes, and based on current projections that margin could rise to as high as 2.5 million votes.
Apparently feeling the wound to his ego after being rejected by a plurality of voters, Trump took to his safe space on Twitter on Sunday afternoon. He tweeted out, “In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”
The completely false claim is a reference to a right-wing fake news meme that has circulated online between Trump supporters for weeks.
They believe – falsely – that 3 million undocumented immigrants voted in the election, and thus are able to rationalize in their minds the way in which Trump lost to Hillary Clinton in the popular vote.
It is unclear whether the fake story came just from right-wing Trump supporters or from the various Russian propaganda sites that have popped up to feed multiple pro-Trump narratives on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
Trump’s popular vote loss is even larger when compared to the most recent president who faced a similar situation. When George W. Bush became president in 2001, he had lost the popular vote to Al Gore by a little over 500,000 votes.
At the end of the day, Trump’s rejection in the raw vote total could be 500% higher than Bush’s. Bush will also most likely have entered office with a much higher level of support from the population than Trump will.
Trump has repeatedly associated himself with fellow conspiracy theorists, including radio host Alex Jones, who believes that the U.S. government was behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks and that the Sandy Hook school shooting was a false flag executed by actors and fake children.
It is unclear how many of these other conspiracy theories Trump believes (he said climate change was a hoax from the Chinese government), as thus far the mainstream media has failed to ask Trump if he also believes 9/11 conspiracies or other false theories long since disproved by facts and history.
