The Number One Movie In America Stars A Woman From An Ethnic Minority

Even in an America politically dominated by Donald Trump and right-wing Republicans, people are willing to vote with their wallets and pocketbooks for diversity.

Disney’s Moana dominated the Thanksgiving weekend box office, earning $81.1 million, enough to rank second all-time for a Thanksgiving opening (the top film is also a Disney film, Frozen).

Moana‘s two lead roles are Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), and Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson), both actors of Polynesian descent in a film set in the Pacific islands. The music in the film is from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina.

Miranda is of course known for his blockbuster play, Hamilton, in which a diverse cast tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton.
