Chicago police have relieved a police officer from duty after he shot and killed 19-year-old Kajuan Raye, who is black.
The officer – who the police department isn’t identifying – told investigators that the teenager pointed a weapon at him, which prompted the shooting. But the police department can’t find any gun on the scene.
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said, “Based on the little information we know at this point, I have concerns about this incident.”
Raye was shot in the back, adding to the police department’s concerns about the killing.
A statement from Raye’s family said, “As a city we continue to struggle with police who are afraid of and have deep seeded prejudices against black youth.”
They are asking for the police officer who killed the young man to be held accountable for his actions.
