Trump Education Pick Linked To Child Labor Push

Donald Trump’s choice for Secretary of Education has a disturbing connection to a push for child labor.

On Wednesday, Trump announced that he had selected billionaire Betsy DeVos to run the Department of Education.

DeVos is one of the funders of The Acton Institute, a right wing “think tank.” Acton Institute recently published an essay calling for child labor, describing it as “a gift our kids can handle.”

The post said: “Let us not just teach our children to play hard and study well, shuffling them through a long line of hobbies and electives and educational activities. A long day’s work and a load of sweat have plenty to teach as well.”

The Huffington Post notes that the essay “raises serious questions about the woman who would potentially be in charge of U.S. public schools.”

Randi Weingarten of the American Federation Of Teachers slammed the nomination: “In nominating DeVos, Trump makes it loud and clear that his education policy will focus on privatizing, defunding and destroying public education in America.”
