Keith Ellison Launches Campaign For DNC Chair

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) announced on Monday that he would formally be running for chairman of the Democratic Party.

In a statement, Ellison said, “I am proud to announce my candidacy for Chair of the Democratic National Committee, and if given the opportunity to serve, I will work tirelessly to make the Democratic Party an organization that brings us together and advances an agenda that improves people’s lives.”

Ellison has served as the chairman of the House Progressive Caucus, and was one of the first to recognize Donald Trump as a legitimate presidential contender.

The Minnesota Democrat backed Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primary, but then endorsed Secretary Hillary Clinton after Sanders dropped out of the race.

Former Vermont governor Howard Dean has also announced that he is running for chairman of the party. Dean previously served as chairman during the 2006 and 2008 elections, after which Democrats won the House, Senate, and White House.
