D.C. Cinematic Universe: The Complete Guide

The D.C. Cinematic Universe (also referred to as the DC Extended Universe) is the movie adaptation of the D.C. Comics Universe of characters. This includes movie versions of key characters including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Justice League of America.

The D.C. Cinematic Universe is created by the Warner Brothers movie studio. Both Warner Brothers and D.C. Comics are owned by Time Warner. Key creative minds behind the D.C. cinematic universe are director Zack Snyder and writer David Goyer.

The D.C. Cinematic Universe began in theaters in 2013 with the film Man of Steel.

Man of Steel

Man of Steel (2013) (buy) – Man of Steel tells the origin of Superman, sole survivor of the planet Krypton who was sent to earth by his parents. Superman discovers he has amazing powers including super-strength, flight, x-ray vision, heat vision, and super speed.

Superman is revealed as the first superhero within the D.C. Cinematic Universe after Kryptonian General Zod escapes with others from the Phantom Zone and threatens to destroy Earth in order to create a new home planet for Kryptonians.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) (buy) – Responding to the revelation of the existence of Superman, Batman is driven to oppose Superman because of the unchecked power he represents.

Billionaire Lex Luthor creates the creature Doomsday and Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman band together in public for the first time in order to defeat him. Batman and Wonder Woman discover via Lexcorp files the Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman.

Batman enlists Wonder Woman in creating a team that will eventually become the Justice League.

We also learn that Batman has existed for some time in the D.C. Cinematic Universe but most people believe he is a myth.

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad (2016) – A government agency led by Amanda Waller decides to assemble a team of superpowered villains into a so-called “Suicide Squad” to deal with hopeless missions.

The Suicide Squad is activated to go after serial killer clown, The Joker.

Batman appears in Suicide Squad.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman (2017) – Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers … and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman will be set in the past and tell the story of how Diana left the island of Themyscira to enter the world of man during World War I.

Justice League

Justice League (2017) – Batman and Wonder Woman seek out The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg in order to form a team capable of taking on the biggest threats in the world, the Justice League.

Steppenwolf will be the key villain in Justice League.

It has also been announced that Ben Affleck will direct and star in a standalone Batman movie, which would be a key milestone in the D.C. Cinematic Universe due to Batman’s importance.
