Fox News host Gretchen Carlson said she was fired from her job after the head of the network sexually harassed her.
Carlson, who was the host of “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” on Fox News until June 23rd, alleges that she was let go from the network as a retaliatory strike. Carlson alleges that Roger Ailes, who runs Fox News Channel for billionaire Rupert Murdoch, made sexual advances.
When she rebuffed them, Carlson claims that she was fired from the conservative network.
Carlson claims that Ailes told her in September 2015: “I think you and I should have had a sexual relationship a long time ago and then you’d be good and better and I’d be good and better.” Ailes and Carlson were reportedly meeting to discuss ongoing discriminatory treatment she experienced at Fox News.
In her complaint Carlson also alleges that Ailes called her a “man hater” who tried to “show up the boys” at the pro-Republican network.
Carlson worked for the network for 11 years.
“I have strived to empower women and girls throughout my entire career,” Ms. Carlson said. “Although this was a difficult step to take, I had to stand up for myself and speak out for all women and the next generation of women in the workplace. I am extremely proud of my accomplishments at Fox News and for keeping our loyal viewers engaged and informed on events and news topics of the day.”
Gretchen Carlson Fired From Fox News
Her lawyers note, “Ms. Carlson was terminated without warning on June 23. The complaint alleges that her firing at a time when her show was at the height of its popularity constitutes the ultimate act of retaliation by Mr. Ailes.”
Nancy Erika Smith, one of her lawyers notes, “We believe that the evidence will confirm that Gretchen was fired from ‘Fox & Friends’ for speaking up about demeaning and discriminatory behavior on and off the set.”
Carlson says Ailes derailed her career “after she reported condescending sexist behavior by her former ‘Fox & Friends’ co-host Steve Doocy, who went out of his way to diminish her and at one point yanked her arm down to silence her during a live telecast.” She said Ailes mocked her for thiking “it only rains on women” and complained that she was “offended so God damned easy.” She also claims he called her a “man hater” and “killer” who tried to “show up the boys.”
Allegations Of Sexual Harassment By Roger Ailes Of Fox News
Her complaint, which has been filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey, also “outlines a long list of sexually-charged comments and other wrongful behavior by the 76-year-old Mr. Ailes, ranging from lewd innuendo, ogling and remarks about Ms. Carlson’s body to demands for sex as a way for her to improve her job standing,” according to a press release.
Carlson also says “Mr. Ailes asked Ms. Carlson to turn around so he could view her posterior, commented repeatedly about her legs, and instructed her to wear certain outfits that he claimed enhanced her figure.”
He also allegedly said, “I’m sure you can do sweet nothings when you want to” and described his marriage as “boring” while declaring that he wanted to be stranded on a desert island with his female employee.
The complaint accuses Ailes of telling attendees at an industry event that he always stays seated when a woman approaches so she has to “bend over” to greet him.
