It really shouldn’t be amazing or seem unusual when a politician completely betrays a principle he stood for as recently as a month or two ago. But still, the way that his former rivals and Republican establishment has completely capitulated to Donald Trump is one of the most craven displays in recent political history.
On Sunday morning, Sen. Marco Rubio laid bare just how much of a toady he is.
Marco Rubio apologized privately to Donald Trump in person backstage before a Republican debate for crude remarks he made about Trump’s appearance, the Florida senator said in an exclusive CNN interview.
Chief among those, Rubio has said, was belittling Trump for the size of his hands in the leadup to Super Tuesday, which he has publicly said he regrets. But Rubio went further when speaking with Tapper.
“I actually told Donald — one of the debates, I forget which one — I apologized to him for that,” Rubio said. “I said, ‘You know, I’m sorry that I said that. It’s not who I am and I shouldn’t have done it.’ I didn’t say it in front of the cameras, I didn’t want any political benefit.”
Rubio previously described Trump as a “con man” who shouldn’t be anywhere near the United States’ nuclear launch codes. On CNN he said he would speak on Trump’s behalf at the convention if asked.
It shows that for Rubio – and the other Republicans who issued dire warnings about the danger a Trump presidency would present to America and the world – his campaign was based on meaningless lies. Furthermore, it shows that their warnings about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are similarly nothing more than political posturing.
If these men actually cared about America, they wouldn’t be marching around now hailing “Mr. Trump.”
In reality, Rubio, Carson, Christie, and the others show that they’re all about power: acquiring it, retaining it, and increasing it. Pathetic.
