Disney Channel star Zendaya Coleman has been cast in the newest reboot in the Spider-Man movie series. The Huffington Post confirms that Zendaya will appear alongside Tom Holland, who is playing Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the film.
Her role is a mystery at this point, as it has only been revealed that her character’s name is “Michelle.” The typical romantic leads for Spider-Man have been based on the characters of Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, so it does not appear that this is a romantic character.
Huffington Post speculates that Zendaya may be playing Michele Gonzales, younger sister of a police officer who is friends with Peter Parker. The two characters had a one-night stand in a storyline for the comic book.
There is also some speculation online that Zendaya may eventually play the character “Silk,” who has similar spider powers to Spider-Man, and has also had a romantic relationship with the webslinger, intensified by their shared superpowers.
The new Spider-Man movie will be integrated into the existing “Marvel Cinematic Universe” as a joint production by Sony and Disney. The move came about because the Sony attempt to reboot Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel were not the box office smashes that Sony had hoped they would be, similar to the three Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire from the same studio.
Now, Spider-Man will be a part of the blockbuster world of The Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, and others.
At the same time, Sony has a huge recent success on its hands with Deadpool, the R-rated comedy about the mercenary mutant for hire starring Ryan Reynolds.
Zendaya currently stars in her own series on Disney, K.C. Undercover, about a family of secret spies that go undercover in order to oppose an evil organization. Zendaya has also appeared on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars.
