Nicki Minaj was born as Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1982. She was born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago. Minaj was then raised in South Jamaica, Queens in New York City.
Her parents are Robert Maraj, a financial executive, and Carol Maraj, who worked in payroll and accounting. They are both from Trinidad. Her father was addicted to alcohol and other drugs, and had a violent temper that resulted in their home being burnt down in December of 1987.
Minaj has two siblings.
Nicki Minaj first appeared on Forbes’ Hip Hop Cash Kings list in 2011 where she earned $5.6 million. In 2012 she earned $15.5 million, in 2013, $29 million and $14 million in 2013. She has a net worth of at least $65 million.
Minaj said she was fired from “at least fifteen jobs,” including a stint as a waitress at Red Lobster in the Bronx. For many of those jobs she said she lost them because she was rude to customers.
Minaj was part of the group The Hoodstars, who recorded the entrance music for WWE diva wrestler Victoria.
Around this time she adopted the stage name “Nicki Maraj,” originally using her real last name.
Minaj was discovered by the music industry when she released three mixtapes between 2007 and 2009. In 2009 she was discovered by rapper Lil Wayne, and then signed to Young Money Entertainment, his label.
She was featured on several collaborations on the label, for songs that became hits on the Billboard charts.
In 2010, Minaj’s first album on a major label, Pink Friday, was released. That album ended up with several songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including at one point 7 songs on the chart at once, the first time that has been done by a female solo artist.
She appeared as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 2011.
After that, the single “Super Bass” was released and peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts and was certified as octuple platinum in the United States.
Wardrobe Malfunction Controversy
During a 2011 appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America, Minaj experienced a wardrobe malfunction resulting in a “nip slip” on live network TV. A conservative group criticized the network for not using a delay during her performance.
Lil’ Kim Feud
Rapper Lil’ Kim has accused Minaj of copying her style. In 2011, Kim released a mixtape, Black Friday, that was seen as a blast at Minaj’s Pink Friday album.
Performing the song “Roman Holiday” from her second album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on the Grammy Awards, Minaj performed a fake exorcism routine and was escorted on the event’s red carpet by an actor playing the Pope. Conservative Christians attacked her for this.
The single “Starships” was released in 2012 and reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was the fifth best-selling single of the year.
Minaj appeared as a judge on the twelfth season of Fox’s American Idol. She feuded on and off air with fellow judge Mariah Carey, and both women left the show after the solo season.
The Pinkprint & Anaconda
The Pinkprint, Minaj’s third album, was released in 2014. The lead single on the album was “Anaconda,” which sampled Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.” The song hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her best performing single. The music video, featuring Minaj’s bare bottom, had 19.6 million views online on its first day of release.

Minaj has endorsed many brands and released products with her own name and branding. She sold a “Pink 4 Friday” lipstick with MAC Cosmetics, a $15,000 official Barbie doll in her likeness, and was the spokesmodel for the Viva Glam makeup campaign.
She has her own perfume, Pink Friday.
