The Taliban Believes This Crazy Right-Wing Conspiracy Theory

Right wing conspiracy theories about President Barack Obama are lodging themselves in the mind of fundamentalist Taliban fighters. That is according to an interview with Bowe Bergdahl, the U.S. Army soldier who was held captive by the Taliban for nearly five years.

Bergdahl was interviewed by filmmaker Mark Boal, who gave the tapes to Sarah Koening, host of the popular podcast, “Serial.”

In the tapes, Bergdahl explains how far the right wing conspiracy has gone:

Although watching over Bergdahl was a high honor, the guards were often bored and would pass the time by making videos of him, interrogating him with ridiculous questions or shaving his beard into shapes they found amusing, he said.

“They ask you, is Obama gay and sleeps with men?” he recalled. His young guards were also curious about where US military bases got their prostitutes, alcohol and drugs, and were obsessed with American soft drinks, he added.

Conservatives have promoted the theory that President Obama is secretly gay for over 8 years. According to them, the President used drugs and had sex with another man who he then convinced to hide his sexual orientation as he climbed the political ladder.

In reality, the story is completely false, but that has not prevented it from being bandied about by the right wing and some members of the right-wing press.

Obama is married with two daughters, part of one the most famous heterosexual families in the world. But he has supported numerous policies focused on LGBT equality.

Obama pushed for the dismantling of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and he was the first major party candidate of either party to support same-sex marriage. Obama has also supported policies that would ensure equality for transgender Americans.

It is for many of these advancements why conservatives seem to believe he is somehow “secretly” gay. And the result of the right pushing this bizarre idea is that it has now lodged itself into the minds of the Taliban, a murderous group that has killed Afghan citizens and Americans stationed in Afghanistan fighting the war.
