U.S. House Speaker’s Race 2015

The race to be Speaker of the House of Representatives began when current Speaker John Boehner announced he would be resigning from the House. Initially Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy was the leading contender for the office but pulled out of the race at the last minute.

October 20

Rep. Paul Ryan (WI) met with the right-wing Freedom Caucus in a sign he may change his mind and decide to run for Speaker. Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid endorsed Ryan.

Later in the day, Ryan announced that if Republicans agreed to his demand for less time fundraising and a bigger focus on policy, he would run for House speaker if the Freedom Caucus supports him by Friday, October 23.

Speaker Boehner announced that the House Speaker race will happen on October 28, 2015.
