Ken Paxton, the Republican Attorney General of Texas, has reportedly been indicted.
WFAA in Texas reports that Paxton has been indicted by a grand jury for violation of securities laws. Prosecutors told the station they planned to charge Paxton for failing to register with the state securities board.
Paxton’s license to practice law in the state, key to his functioning as the attorney general, could be at risk. Paxton’s ties to energy company Servergy are in question. He reportedly owns thousands of shares of the company, which has been under probe for misleading investors by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Paxton has been a darling of the right wing movement. He has previously been backed by Gov. Mike Huckabee’s political action committee and the NRA. Paxton announced support for clerks who had objections to performing same-sex weddings after the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage in the United States.
