Russia under Vladimir Putin has become one of the most hostile nations for gay people in the developed world, and they’re not done yet.

Mikhail Marchenko, a Russian senator, has reportedly referred a complaint to the state media watchdog about the presence of emojis depicting same-sex relationships. Marchenko said the emojis “promoted non-traditional sexual relationships”, “denied family values” and showed “disrespect for parents and other family members.”

A Russian court ruled that Children-404, a site for LGBT youth, was guilty of distributing “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors.”

Apple recently added LGBT themed emojis to its most recent release of iOS software for iPhones and iPads.
