Republicans Shutting Down The Government, Again

John BoehnerTwo big red flags here about a possible government shut down: One, the Democrats are again in capitulation mode, acting as if the party across the aisle is in any way interested about the actual U.S. budget. They aren’t. The GOP is interested in whipping up the base and farting platitudes into the ether. Second, the Republican party is again going to shut down the government? Granted, so far John Boehner has avoided being as obnoxious a personality as Newt Gingrich, but that’s almost like saying you don’t need both legs amputated but one of them has to go.

Republicans are poised to reject a White House offer, TPM has learned, that would cut over $30 billion in current spending because of disagreements over whether the package should include cuts to mandatory spending programs. Democrats are pushing for such cuts, which include the big entitlement programs, though the specific cuts they’re proposing remain unclear. In an ironic twist, Republicans oppose those cuts and want to limit the negotiations to non-defense discretionary spending, a smaller subset of the federal budget.”

Amongst the conservative press – the people who actually run the party – they would love a shutdown.
